Finding Beauty after the Storm
While out grocery shopping recently, I got caught in one of the many afternoon thunderstorms we’ve been having lately. I’m talking torrential downpour and flash flooding type of thunderstorm. Running through the rain to get my car so I could park by the curb to load my groceries, I got soaked. The parking lot had inches of standing water by that time and my tennis shoes became completely sopping wet. I loaded up the groceries as quickly as I could and headed home with my car wheel thumping like it was flat. It wasn’t. The noise was later discovered to be caused by a massive screw and washer stuck in my tire. Once home, it was the mad dash to get the perishable groceries inside while dodging the waterfall flowing off of the second story gutters.
Now, I had a choice. I could be frustrated because I was soaking wet and cold, or I could embrace the adventure I had and laugh about getting sopping wet while grocery shopping. So I chose to laugh about it and enjoy the moment. Sometimes we lose sight that rain is actually a blessing. It waters the ground so plants can grow, which in turn produces the food we need to sustain life. The ground had been so dry a couple of weeks ago and we had been in desperate need for rain. Now that we’d been getting rain just about every day, it was easy to forget how needed it had been. I overheard people complaining about the rain while I was shopping, unaware that they were complaining about a blessing. How often do we overlook the blessings God showers on us because we are frustrated by the perceived inconveniences that sometimes accompany the blessings?
Once the storm passed, I stepped outside to take a look around. I paused in front of the flower bed now full of blooming gladiolas and was able to admire their rain-drenched beauty. Sometimes after a storm, we just need to take a minute and find the beauty around us and be thankful for the blessings in our lives.
